A few months ago, I was working on a project that required some images of airplanes.  The photos had to be good, and they had to be cheap.  I found what I needed at a stock photo gallery from the US Air Force.  The pictures were good, and they were free.  I started looking for other stock photo sites put up by the government.  

I found plenty.

Some sites are good, some suck.  But if you are looking for free photos of military, science or American history-related themes, the government is a good place to start.

I figured that others might find these sites valuable, so I put up this site.  (By the way, here are my top 10 favorites )

Disclaimer

As far as I know, photos produced by the US government are free and in the public domain.  A lot of these galleries explicitly state that you can do whatever you want with their photos. But I make websites - I ain't a lawyer.  So it is up to you to read the guidelines at all of the sites I link to.  There may be restrictions and copyrights on some photos, so be a good citizen and read before you use anything.  If you get into trouble, it's your problem, not mine.
