You'll never know what you'll find at the National Science Foundation website. On the day I wrote this entry, there were articles about a 3.2 million year old human-like fossil, a process for turning loose sand into rock using bacteria, and the effects of snow depth on the thickness of ice.
But what does NSF do? It is an independent federal agency that is the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.
